More Americans than at any point in the past three decades say they’re independent. That number is somewhere between 40% and 43%, depending on who you ask.
So you’d think, maybe, in 2014, 2016, or heading into 2018, we’d have seen an increase in the number of people able to run for office as independent from both major parties. Or, at the very least, fewer people running on the lock-step-same-old-donkey-elephant platforms the two parties always put out? (Right?)
LOL. THAT WOULD MAKE TOO MUCH SENSE.
Even though two out of every five Americans feels this way, our elected leadership hardly represents this reality. At the federal level, less than 1% of the House and Senate — 0.34% to be exact — are not affiliated with one of the two major parties.
So why are most independent-thinkers locked out?
THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED. AND RIGGED. AND RIGGED.
As we’ve mentioned before, Republicans and Democratic party bosses at every level — federal, state, and local — control who’s on our ballots when election day rolls around. They decide who we’re allowed to vote for — and they make sure it’s always someone with an R or D behind their name.
They pay armies of lobbyists and lawyers with piles of dark money to make backroom deals and rig the game — engineering an expensive, exhausting, and complicated process that keeps would-be challengers far, far away.
And once they’re in power, they draw highly skewed maps to keep their districts safe from anyone who might oppose them. We call this gerrymandering, but you can think of it as an ironclad insurance policy that protects the political elites in case anyone tries to break through the gridlock.
AND WE PAY THE PREMIUM
The result of all that hard work? We the people are stuck choosing between their candidates — who will make sure the two-party machine keeps running smoothly. This means more than 40% of us have to vote for someone we don’t really like, but who’s slightly better than the other options. (We hope?) This has to change.
SO LET’S END RED VS. BLUE
SAM — The Serve America Movement (that’s us) was born out of the decades-long frustration our broken two-party system has caused. We’ve got a solution. And we’re working around the clock, in all 50 states, to end to the stranglehold Team R and Team D maintain for themselves.
We can’t do this alone, though. We don’t have those armies of lobbyists and lawyers, or vast networks of secret money. We’re just a scrappy team of humans going up against a massively powerful political machine to help ordinary Americans fight the people profiting from this system so we can finally make it work for everyone again.
So if you’re tired of the bickering, the constant lesser-of-two-evils battles, and the non-stop circus that has become our politics, come join the fight — we need you.
